How to Optimise

How to Optimise – On Page factors By Andrew Clacy Your Marketing Mentor

When optmising your website, make sure you try and optimise one or two keywords per page. Many people try for more than 5, 10, or even 100 different words, that is a big mistake. Sure you can optimise 100, 1000 pages on your website, all with different keywords, make sure each page is optimised for 1 or maybe 2 keywords.

Domain name

Make sure you have your main keyword in your domain name. (see keyword search section).

Select no more than 5 extra characters after your keyword for example here is one I selected http://salesleadbox.com sales lead is the keyword and box meets the 5 or less extra characters.

Research domain names carefully. Don't just pick one you like. You want it to be something a lot of people are searching for, but hopefully has low to medium competition.

Use Wordtracker's FREE trial: http://wordtracker.com

http://www.google.com search will give you an idea about competition for any particular keyword.

Use Overture's search box to find how many times your keyword was searched on last month:

http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion

Once you have chosen go to http://www.godaddy.com to get $8.00 US (per year)

You can also check recently expired domain names it might have a domain name which is very close to what you are looking for. For that Go to http://www.deleteddomains.com do a search on recently expired domain names. Do not include hyphens, numbers .net, .org. . .biz and so forth.

Title Tags

Title Tags are important to the major search engines. The very first word is the most important. So if you put your web address there you had better make sure that people know it and are looking for it. If you don’t know what a title tags is open Internet Explorer, look at the very top of the page and you will see a blue line (you will also notice these words come in Google searches)

Here’s some examples of what to do:

 http://www.tenniswa.com (key word is tennis)

Title tag = Tennis – tennis news – tennis articles

http://www.australiansharetrading.com

Title Tag = ASX | Australian Share Trade & Stock Market Information Provider

Using the same examples this you do not want to do:

Have no title tag = untiled document (who is looking for that?)

Use your name (unless you’re really famous)

Use your web address

Put junk in it (words that mean nothing to the search engines) For example: The best and hottest business in town you will love our prices!!! No one would be looking for that..

Here’s how to change your title tags in frontpage >> open your page, click on the HTML tag at the bottom >> Once you see the HTML code, go to the top of the page and you will see <TITLE><TITLE>

Simply insert your keywords between <title>SEO Elite Software | Search Engine Optimization | Link Popularity | Web Promotion</title> (for example).

Note: there is a general rule of thumb that title shouldn’t be more then 65 characters.

DESCRIPTION:

After Title Tag you should always put the description Meta tag for your website as in particular yahoos till gives lot of weight-age to Meta tags including title, description and keywords.

<meta name="description" content=" Here comes description of your website, it should not be more then 255 characters and description should have few of your keywords keep in mind don’t repeat your any keyword more then 3 times in description. Have the main keyword 1st. This is a must.

All major search engines take that as spamming and will not take that keyword into account while indexing "> description goes before keyword, the keyword should have following syntax : <meta name="description" content=" main keyword 1st, Here comes description of your website, it ">

KEYWORDS:

This tag is also very important and should be used very carefully. It should have keywords in priority order. In simple most important keyword1 appear first, then second important keyword and so on. You have to make sure the keywords that you use are web page relevant and should have density in the page in between 3-7 percent.

<meta name="keywords" content=" Your web page keywords will appear here "> General rule of thumb is to have keywords not more then 800. Though avoid using so many keywords and concentrate on less and optimize them properly on your web pages.

Place your main keyword at the beginning, middle and end of your webpage.

Also include your keyword in the copyright footer of your webpage.

Robot tags

Get the search engine spiders to go into your site. <meta name="robots" content="all"> (now all means you want the crawler to visit all the pages) most of the time you can block the images folder and cgi. <meta name="revisit-after" content="1 Weeks"> this shows that web content will be revised after a week again these are of  less importance

Images

Save your images as your main key word. Also each images has an alt tag. Put your keywords in each ALT tag. If you are using Frontpage here’s how to do it >>

Open your page in Frontpage, right click on the image go to picture properties >> go to the General tab at the top >> Half way down the page you will see Text: with a long white box next to it. Put your keywords in there, click OK >> save the page and you’re done… The html code used to add an <alt> image tag would look like this:

<img src="YourGraphic.jpg" width="503" height="93" alt="wealth creation "?

Need graphics to load quickly-ideally 15 seconds or less on dial up. Small is good.

Get on to People’s Favourites:

This simple piece of code will automatically popup a prompt box to tempt your visitor to bookmark the page into their favorites list. You have just seen it in action.

<body onLoad="if(document.all)

window.external.AddFavorite

(window.document.location,window.document.title)">

Fonts

Stick to Arial, Veranda and Times New Roman.

Colours

Not too many, although you should use some in your sub headings.

Links

Use text links instead of Buttons, search engines like them a lot better. If you insist on the image buttons, make sure they are saved as a keyword. Don’t use the word home as your main link. Use your main key word instead: real estate St.Kilda or cheap travel. This works a lot better than “home” to a search engine. Home is too competitive and no one is looking for it on the search engine. Little tweaks over time make all the difference.

Underline / Italics

This technique is only good for printed materials, if it is on a website, people think it is a link and will try and click on it. Try not to use italics online; however the use of Bold is often effective.

Write Comments in the Source Code:
Few search engines when reading the source code do read the comment section so they should be intelligently utilize them, with your keywords to have proper keyword density.

W3C Compliance

Compliance helps improves the performance of pages site-wide in the SERPs

Now lets look at it from the simple logical point of view:

Reduce the amount of code on your page and the content (you know, the place where your keywords are) takes a higher priority. Additionally compliance will, by necessity, make your site easily spidered and also allow you greater control over which portions of your content are given more weight by the search engines.

White background

Notice what most Internet Marketer’s use, white backgrounds so they have black (or navy blue) text on white backgrounds. It is much easier to read than black ground/white text

It is ok however to have a white box inside a colour for sales letter example: ExplosiveCopy (blue background) Or web business Your Marketing Mentor

H1,  H2 Tags, H3

Put your headline in a H1 tag and your subhead in a H2 tag. Make sure you keyword is in each. (preferably in the middle of each tag) The search engines look at these tags, so they are important. Heres how to convert your headline into a H1 (or H2) headline.

Open front Page >>Highlight the Headline you want as H1 >> look at the top left hand corner. You will see “Normal” drop down the menu >> select heading 1 >> save.

Flash Animation

Have you seen the huge introductions? Big flashing lights? Don’t put it on your website, people click off it. Flash does not sell, it slows sites down.

Content

Search engines love content. Put articles on your website, (see article chapter for more information). Try and have your keyword in about 2 – 5 times for every 100 words on your site. (That is keyword density).

Have your keyword appear early (H1 & H2) and often. Also make sure it is near the bottom of you page too.

Sell through education; appear to be the holder of knowledge in what ever market you are in. People prefer to be sold through education, heavy sales pushes don’t work.

Call To Action

You website must have a mechanism to get people to do something. If you want to collect emails, give them a reason to put their name and email into your auto responder.

Don’t just say enter here or something like that. You must actually “sell” or “educate” people to put their details into your system.

For example at http://www.darvastrading.com we sell some great share trading software, to get their email, we ethically bribe them by the free information they will get once they are on the “other side.” They get instant access” to a 80 min audio presentation + plus ebooks. This is a great concept and can be applied to many things. I use Audio Generator by the way.

Once on the other side they can purchase the software with a faxback form.

Another site http://www.datingmagic.net (before I knew about .com’s) Offers free education to men who want to know how to talk to women. Just to enter the site there is a short page (called a squeeze page) to let them know what is on the other side if they leave their details. (This is one of our best selling products, which I own the Master rights to).

Here’s what it says..” Please type in your first name and primary email address to get instant access to Dating Mastery Tips. The Secrets to winning Women's Hearts awaits you on the other side...”

You will also notice there the submit button does not say submit. It says: Free Instant Access >> … Why the >> ? It has been tested that you get a 14% higher opt in with >>, it is like a visual verb, a doing action.

Ask For the Sale

If you have ever done any sales training you will spend a lot of time learning about “closing.” All closing is asking for the sale. Don’t try and sell something without asking. This sounds simple, but I see a lot of websites who “hope” you buy something.

2 Examples:

You have nothing to lose (and a successful, new you to gain) because regardless, the FREE bonuses are yours to keep just for giving us a try.

This is not a Copywriting Course,

You will need to learn how to write headlines. The best piece of information I know is to create an online and offline swipe file. Create a folder called swipe file. Then every time you see great copy, save it. One of the best sales letters I have seen online is http://www.johnreesetrafficsecrets.net . Study the elements that have gone into that letter.   Mould your own words into successful sales letters. There is a lot more information at ExplosiveCopy.
